There was more grapefruit and oranges than we have seen altogether in a while….. Which orange groves were we at? ….that citrus smell making its way through our nostrils…… the pinks, the yellows, the oranges and the green colors everywhere and… just to think the juice that could emanate from all that fruit we were seeing! Was all that light shining upon us emitting a sort of really good “vitamin D” sunshine to our bodies?? Was it really a Florida break from this longer-than-ever winter we’ve had? or was it simply a mirage in our minds?
Noooo, it was a night of Volunteering for Team Wagner at Harvesters! The Wagner “people” working for the “People” of Kansas City. We had a group of 17 volunteers from Wagner plus some family members go to Harvesters Community Food Network Headquarters. Eager and ready after a day at the office or driving a truck all day hauling, our employees split in different groups picking out good fruit and bagging them for distribution to centers that help the needy in the KC area. We cleaned out the “bad” fruit slam-dunking it in the trash bins; we stocked piles and piles of bagged fruit; emptied bins filled to the brim which held approximately 400 pounds (ea) of fruit and bagged them for distribution. Throughout the evening we bagged about 10 of those bins or approximately 4,000 Lbs of fruit! We even skipped the “tour” so that we could get more work done! This fruit was ripening right before our eyes and we feel we need to get it out the door ASAP to the people who need it!!!
Overall, we feel it was a successful evening at our “People” event and we are thankful to have had the help of teenager volunteers there to do the “heavy” hauling and climbing in boxes (though Mr. Wagner also found himself “in the box”-see pictures). Thanks Project Change for being a vehicle we can take advantage of to be of help to our community!! |
