Team Namasté
Donation Based Winter Solstice Class for TLC Kids!
Team Namasté consists of four women, from Radiant Yoga Studio, who are eager to use their passion for yoga for the greater good of the community. After learning about the increase in homelessness among children and teens in the Johnson County area, Team Namasté decided that the team would use their yoga teaching skills to raise money for KidsTLC.
On Monday, December 19th, 2011, Team Namasté hosted a donation based Winter Solstice class. It’s a tradition in the practice of yoga, to welcome in the shortest day and longest night of the year by performing 108 Sun Salutations through a Winter Solstice celebration. A Sun Salutation is a series of about 12 asanas (yoga poses) performed one after another in honor of the sun, since the sun both nourishes and gives life to us and our planet.
For Radiant Yoga’s celebration, three yoga teachers each took a turn leading students through 36 sun salutations. After completing 108 sun salutations, the fourth instructor led the students through a guided meditation. In lieu of payment for the class, the team asked the students who attended to leave “love donations” for the KidsTLC. In addition to the money donated by students, the teachers and Radiant Yoga also left love donations totaling $170.00.
The celebration ended with some festive teas, cookies and some tired, but fulfilled yogis. It was a wonderful feeling knowing that we had all come together to share our time and energy for something so important!
