Scott Rice Office Works and Image Flooring

Active Challenge Seasons: 2010, 2011

Employees from Scott Rice Office Works and Image Flooring have teamed up to make a change! We can’t wait to see what kind of impact we can make in the Kansas City community.

“Project Change is a wonderful way to motivate people to get involved in our community. It’s so amazing to see how one simple task can bring so much joy to someone else’s life.” – Barb Corley, Scott Rice Office Works Designer

No More Homeless Pets KC - Neighborhood Outreach Team

Every year thousands of animals end up in our area shelters because their owners can no longer afford to care for them. A local non-profit organization called, No More Homeless Pets KC, is working to make that change and to find caring homes for every pet in KC.  With the help of volunteers and donations from people within our community, they are, also, working to make Kansas City a No-kill community by the year 2012.  To do this, they are providing high quality, affordable pet care for those with financial limitations including:

  • Low-cost spay/neuter services
  • General Wellness
  • Vaccinations
  • Blood work and diagnostics
  • Dentals
  • Surgery

As a company who believes in the strong bond between humans and animals, Scott Rice Office Works and Image Flooring has chosen No More Homeless Pets KC as the organization we believe will benefit from our help!

For our first challenge, we created a Neighborhood Outreach Team.  Our volunteers spent many hours hanging over 500 fliers on the doors of homes in a lower income neighborhood of Independence, MO.  These fliers helped get the word out about the clinic and helped educate the public on the importance and benefits of Spay/Neuter.

Just days after our challenge was competed NMHPKC had already received numerous calls from people who received our fliers, many of which asked questions about the organization and scheduled appointments for their furry friends.

A job well done...more to come!

friends of our "family"

At the beginning of the year we had decided to donate our causes towards No More Homeless Pets, KC.  So, for this challenge we have filled the need of collecting donations from their “Wish List”.   Items donated ranged from cleaning agents to collars, kennels and toys .

In addition to collecting donations for NMHPKC, we also raised money for one of our own employees.  Unfortunately, on February 13th his 22 year old daughter, Alex, fell off her horse while barrel racing and suffered a traumatic brain injury.  She has been in a coma since the fall and there is no surgery or medical cure for her injury.  This poor family has incurred sky-high medical bills and is also faced with major expenses for travel and lodging (Alex was transferred to a long-term acute care facility in NE).

Immediately upon learning about the accident, we pitched in and purchased a $500 Visa gift card to help this family.  Since then, we have collected an additional $800 for them to use on travel and lodging expenses.

In addition to raising money, we have come up with creative ways to fill this need.  With the NCAA tournament at hand, we are donating the proceeds of our company bracket pool back to the family.  Another $200!

Lastly, we purchased 50 “Team Alex” bracelets and we are selling those for $1.00 each to donate.

We will continue to find small ways to raise funds and help Alex and her family through this difficult time.

Hope for the homeless (pets)

No More Homeless Pets KC sets up a monthly pet adoption at local PetSmart locations around KC.  We decided that our organization would volunteer our time to help them adopt out their animals to loving homes and families (CREATING HOPE) for these furry animals.  During our time volunteering, four kitties were adopted and placed in homes where their lives will be forever happy!  Help promote change and adopt a local shelter animal!

Valentines Party

When employees of Scott Rice Office Works & 360 Architecture were presented with their first Project Change challenge – to perform a community service event based around people…interacting, connecting, and helping those in need - they fell in love with the idea of reaching out to as many people as possible, but wanted to really, TRULY feel as though they’ve connected with them and touched the lives of many.

The idea of helping those in need is hard to beat…unless, of course, you take those people in need and HAVE THEM HELP OTHERS!!! That is EXACTLY what volunteers from Scott Rice Office Works & 360 Architecture did! They spent one fun-filled evening working with the youth at Synergy Services (a local shelter for runaway and homeless teens who focus on helping families with despite from violence) to create special treats for other people in need. Sixteen volunteers and their family members invaded Synergy Service’s space with all the supplies (and pizza) needed to help the teens decorate heart-shaped sugar cookies, make Valentine’s Day greeting cards and create fabulous treat-bags all while sharing stories from the past and their plans for the future!

The treat-bags created were taken to the local Kansas City Ronald McDonald house for families who are currently residing there and their children who are receiving care at Children’s Mercy Hospital. Each bag contained sugar cookies, a deck of band-aid shaped playing cards, a heart-shaped Valentine’s straw, and a special hand-made greeting card.

In the end, helping one small group of people connected many = Volunteers from Scott Rice & 360 to the youth at Synergy; Youth at Synergy to Residents at Ronald McDonald House; RMH to patients at Children’s Mercy! Mission accomplished!

Places

Benefiting: Synergy Services

Synergy Services envisions a world without family violence, abuse or neglect. To realize that kind of place, Synergy opened its new homeless youth campus in Kansas City on March 14, with the help of the team of 360 Architecture and Scott Rice.

Synergy gives at-risk and homeless youths health and dental care, therapy, even the simple opportunity to take a shower and do laundry. In recent years, because of its limited facilities, Synergy was able to serve only a dozen youths at a time. The new shelter can house twice that many. Additionally, the new Youth Resource and Resiliency Center serves hundreds more by giving them a place where they can come and learn about art, work on computers, get a work-out, and play music.

For the grand opening, 360/Scott Rice volunteers helped Synergy over two days of events. The team provided food and beverages, registered visitors, gave tours and cleaned up. The purpose behind the events was to reach out to children, teens and families in the community, to help them understand and embrace Synergy’s vital mission. In words of Executive Director Robin Winner, Synergy tries to change people’s world view by wrapping them with support. The 360/Scott Rice team applied that same concept helping Synergy with its grand opening.

Things - Synergy Services

Benefiting: Synergy Services

Last year, almost 1,000 people found refuge in the shelters operated by Synergy Services. With a new Synergy House now open that doubles their capacity for homeless teens, the number of people they serve will grow. Day to day operations of the shelters require many items, which is what 360 and Scott Rice teamed up to help provide.

We created a mini-competition to put each of our groups against each other to see who could raise the most items from Synergy’s needs list. On April 22nd, there was a happy hour to get together and count all the items and everyone was surprised and inspired by the amount that was raised. These things will help clean, feed, clothe, and house a great number of kids and families in the area who need it most.
