John A Marshall Co. - KC

JAMCO is busy planning their events for 2011!

We are a team of volunteers who can deliver a wealth of benefits.  Self-worth, great fun, friendships and job opportunities can all be part of getting involved with your community. Volunteering may be an outlet for your natural talents, a road-test for your new career, or simply a handy way to meet new friends. We are anxious to help out a group in need and that's why we have chosen to work with Operation Breakthrough.   The mission of Operation Breakthrough is to help children who are living in poverty develop to their fullest potential by providing them a safe, loving and educational environment.  Volunteers here do anything from rocking babies, tutoring parents for the GED exam, tutoring school-aged children, sharing like hobbies and more!  We also plan on helping the foundation through donations, day-to-day hygiene needs, and a classroom makeover!

Some people want it to happen, some wish it to happen, JAMCO volunteers make it happen :)

Making Houses More Homey

One of Operation Breakthrough's programs involves placing homeless families into either transitional or permanent housing to help them get back on their feet and provide a steady home environment for their children.  Because these families are strapped for cash, it is imperitive that they spend their income on rent, utilities and food, which often times doesn't leave much for other necessities.   Operation Breakthrough steps in and provides them with furnishings and appliances, which have been donated to the organization.  We decided to hold a collection drive at our offices, where people could bring in smaller household items, such as blankets, bedsheets, towels, and small appliances.  In order to collect the larger things, i.e. beds, sofas, dressers, etc., a couple of us spent a Saturday afternoon doing a few pickups and then we sent a couple of our John A. Marshall Company box trucks around to employees' homes to pick them up and then deliver everything to a warehouse used by Operation Breakthrough.    It was quite an effort to coordinate 10+ pickups during business hours while people were busy working, but in the end we ended up with a pretty darn good haul (see below).

(8) Beds

(6) Dressers

(13) Tables

(8) Chairs/Recliners

(3) Sofas

(4) Small & Large Appliances

(10) Cabinets/Bookcases/Shelves

(40) Blankets/Sheets/Towels

We look forward to working with Operation Breakthrough again in our next challenge, so STAY TUNED!

Babies, Babies Everywhere

Some of the biggest necessities at Operation Breakthrough are for the smallest people they care for; infants and toddlers.  With 112 of them being cared for each day, you can probably imagine how quickly they go through through daily hygiene items, such as wipes, diapers, lotion, vaseline, cups, etc.  In an effort to lessen the burden on Operation Breakthrough, we decided to hold inter-office drives as well as mix in a fundraiser with one of our industry events that we held in early March to collect as many of their needed hygiene products as possible.  Our annual FDC Darts tournament was the catalyst for the the majority of the donations we received.  We are still trying to collect some additional items, but at this point we have collected the following:

Wipes - 1,835

Diapers - 475

Dixie Cups - 1,350

Baby Lotion/Vaseline - 19 bottles

Baby Wash - 8 bottles

Dish Soap - 7 bottles

Sippy Cups - 18

Various pacifiers, spoons, snack boxes

Classroom Makeover

For our final challenge, we will be heading over to Operation Breakthrough for some face time with the kiddos.  Within the center, they have multiple areas for different activities, such as a homework lab, art studio, science room, club/game room, literacy room, and home ec.  We have decided to jazz up a few of the spaces, with the help of some of their children.  We aim to make it a fun experience with a lot of hands-on work, like wall stencils, painting, assembling huddle tables, and playing games.  We also plan to provide additional supplies, like science kits, instruments, books, etc. to make each area as fun and educational as possible.  Below are a couple of pictures of the spaces that we will be transforming.
