Warm the Homeless

Benefiting: reStart, Inc. & No More Homeless Pets of KC

We challenged members of Derbi Does it! to “Warm the Homeless”. We chose two organizations to focus our efforts on.

The first was reStart, Inc., an interfaith ministry with homeless persons that is committed to providing shelter and supportive services to homeless men, women, youth and families with the goal of helping them move toward independence and self-sufficiency. reStart explained they have a continuous need for towels which are not considered in an average donation. We organized a Derbi towel drive that generated close to 100 new and gently used towels. reStart was grateful for our donations which also included over 10 pounds of travel size soaps, shampoos, etc. Our goal is to continue working with reStart on future projects.

The second organization we chose was No More Homeless Pets of KC, a non-profit animal welfare organization. NMHPKC is working towards a day when all pets in Kansas City have a home. Their programs are focused on providing high quality, low-cost, spay/neuter services to low income pet owners. The items we collected for NMHPKC included dog food, cat food, office supplies and cleaning supplies along with blankets, collars, toys and treats. During our tour we witnessed the love and care they provide and the need for additional donations to help continue their mission and provide a low cost solution for animals in Kansas City.

Feed the Hungry

Benefiting: Harvesters Community Food Network

In the month of March we challenged members of Derbi Does It! to “Feed the Hungry”

The charity we focused on was Harvesters Community Food Network. Nearly 60,000 people receive emergency food assistance through Harvesters’ network in any given week. Harvesters is the community’s response to hunger in Greater Kansas City. We sponsored a food drive for the month of March at our offices. We were able to fill a barrel to the brim! The total weight of our food donations was over 150 lbs!

In addition to our month long food drive we participated in a volunteer opportunity at Harvester. We organized a group of Derbi-Doers! to pack the BackSnacks that Harvesters provides to elementary students in the greater Kansas City region to take home over the weekend to stave off hunger! Within 3 hours our eager group of 9 volunteers packed over 840 BackSnacks!

Save the Planet

Benefiting: Green Works

For the month of April “Save the Planet” we adopted a local after school program called GreenWorks located at DeLa Salle High School in the KCMO School District. Green Works in Kansas City is the dedicated leader in engaging urban youth in sustainable environmental stewardship and the green economy. Through science-based experiential learning and paid internship opportunities, young adults learn to care for the environment, experience meaningful career ladders, gain skills that assist them in becoming productive employees, and provide direct community benefits for all of us by improving the urban environment.

On April 14th we visited the students in their classroom setting to discuss and teach the environmental benefits of renewable energy in the building envelope. They learned about sustainable environments, environmental manufacturing processes, and the environmental impact of photovoltaic systems & garden roofs. Following our discussion in the classroom the students had a field trip at our manufacturing plant on the afternoon of April 21st. They viewed first hand the manufacturing process of a local business, right in their neighborhood, making a conscious effort to reduce their carbon footprint all while assisting others to do the same. The students had many questions about the recycling efforts and even helped feed our recycling unit. The students gained insight in to the growing employment opportunities with Green Collar jobs.

This hands on experience showed that they can individually make an impact on the environment and have a variety of options when it comes to choosing a career path. We look forward to continuing our work with this group during May!

Nurture the Children

Benefiting: Green Works

For the month of May we choose to focus our efforts on Green Works of Kansas City again. Our work with the group in April brought to our attention their need for additional support – which inspired us to assist in raising the awareness of Green Works in the community and help raise funds for their Summer 2009 Internship Program.

Our effort to raise awareness about Green Works was premiered at Earth Fest on May 9th. Earth Fest was an opportunity for us to educate the public on Green Works and their role in the urban core. We were able to spread the Green Works message to nearly 1,500 eclectic people concerned about the environment and the youth of Kansas City.
Following Earth Fest we continued our quest to find supporters for the Summer Internship Program. It is critically important for Green Works to provide the opportunity for 6 – 8 of their students to continue the program through summer internships. An internship is a particularly important juncture for the students - early work experience makes it easier to get a job as an adult. They plan to place students at Parks & Rec, Habitat Restore and the Discovery Center this summer.

We sought out donations from our employees, customers and the DERBIGUM network of industry contacts. We were able to raise $575 from this campaign. This amount will fund 70 hours of internship for the students

The awareness and donations will help fund the internships that will change the Green Works students' summer experiences and potentially their future careers!
